325 pp. with bibliography (Authorities Consulted). Frontis +15 brown-tone photos. Dust jacket with b&w photo of thatch-roofed village. In this book "...Haiti comes to life; you hear the beat of its drums, watch its dancers under the moon. and lose your money at its cock-fights. Slaves, Emperors and Kings act out for you their dramatic stories. The author says, 'there is no hypocrisy in Hatian history; their heroes are not lay figures stuffed with noble sawdust, but Africans of extra-ordinary personality.' ...instead of a glorified guide books,... the reader will find expressed the feel of the people, their homes and their traditions." CONDITION: Dust jacket is protected by a new mylar cover. The jacket is missing a 2 3/4 inch long section of the spine panel from below the title to the midpoint of the spine. Spine is sunned and the title is very faint. All edges of jacket are worn, with wrinkles and chipping, chips from all corners. Creases criss-cross front panel. "Office File Copy" stamp on back panel parallel to lower spine. Jacket is not clipped, but shows no price on flap. Black cloth spine with gilt titles, orange and gold, paper-covered boards. Spine is dulled. Tips worn to boards. Top edges of cover sunned. Same rubber stamp as on back panel of spine on top edge of page block, but faded. Edges of page block show use, dust and aging. Binding tight, not crisp. Front hinge beginning to crack. Former owner name, address on ffep in blue ballpoint ink. Erased penciled numbers in table of contents. Occasional smudge in margins. Text is unmarked.
